AREA LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES TEAM TOGETHER FOR ANNUAL "SHOP WITH A COP" EVENT
Posted: December 13th, 2012 11:48 AM

The Salem Police Department, Marion County Sheriff's Office, Keizer Police Department, Oregon State Police and the non-profit Law Enforcement for Youth are proud to announce that we will be able to make the holidays a bit brighter for over 400 local children during this year's Law Enforcement for Youth Shop With A Cop Event.

The event will be held at the Walmart store, 5250 Commercial St SE from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm on Saturday, December 15. This program has been going for over 20 years and is funded entirely by donations from the community. Needy children are nominated by various community entities to include the Salem and Marion County Housing Authorities, Department of Human Services, School District and community members. The children are then invited to join in on the event that teams them with law enforcement personnel at the Walmart store. The children are given a gift card from Walmart and are accompanied by the law enforcement employee as they shop for whatever they wish in the store.

Last year's event saw over 100 criminal justice employees and volunteers from numerous criminal justice agencies and approximately 400 children participating in the program. This year we will again be inviting over 400 children to shop.

This is a very popular and positive event for the children and law enforcement personnel alike. It is an excellent opportunity for the children in our community to have a fun interaction with law enforcement and to form positive relationships that will last for years to come. The public is invited to come and share in this experience as well and donations for the event will be accepted.

***Media Note***
Walmart has authorized media cameras to record the event under certain conditions. Please contact Lt Okada at the event when you arrive to coordinate.
