Four members of the Salem Fire Department are retiring in December who have a combined experience of 120 years in fire and emergency services.

Battalion Chief Scott Parker was hired as a firefighter with Salem Fire in December of 1983. He first promoted to Apparatus Operator/Engineer in 1986 and then to the rank of Captain in 1992. After serving 10 years as a company officer, Scott promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief in 2002. Chief Parker was a charter member of the department's Hazardous Materials Team, Technical Rescue team, Water Rescue and Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams. During his career, Chief Parker earned two unit citations from the Oregon Fire Chief's Association. He currently commands the B-shift North Battalion of the City of Salem, housed at Fire Station #2.

Captain Kirk Jolma is retiring after 31 years of service with the Salem Fire Department. Hired in 1981 as a firefighter, Kirk first promoted to Apparatus Operator/Engineer in 1985 and Captain in 1997 where he has served for the past 15 years. Captain Jolma also received a Unit Citation from the Oregon Fire Chiefs Association. Captain Jolma currently serves at the Airport fire station, Fire Station # 6.

Captain Robert Benson currently serves at the downtown station, Fire Station #1. He was hired in 1981 as a firefighter and has served 31 years with the department. Bob promoted to Apparatus Operator/Engineer in 1989 and to Captain in 2007. Captain Benson was heavily involved with training and development of new firefighter recruits during his 31 years and was instrumental in the fire station construction project related to the 2006 Fire Bond.

Captain Craig Snively hired into the Salem Fire Department as a firefighter in 1983. In 1992 Craig promoted to the rank of Captain. Craig currently works at Fire Station 2 in North Salem.

While this is a big loss of combined experience for the Salem Fire Department, we thank each of these individuals for their commitment to serving the needs of the Salem community and wish all of them the best in their retirement.
