As soon as chickens are legal in Salem, these folks will be very helpful.

For Willamette Valley residents interested in keeping a few backyard hens, a new resource has emerged for obtaining rare breeds of chickens, mobile chicken tractors, feed, and helpful advice. This resource is The Chick Inn, a 2-acre farm near Monmouth, owned and operated by Shelley & Ken Behymer.

The Chick Inn is being featured in the next episode of Living Culture. See the video below.

Billy Joel and Elton John at the Rose Garden

Living in Salem, we're not to far from world class entertainment. Check out this concert at the Rose Garden in Portland only an hours drive from the capitol.

It still boggles my mind that people are shooting videos like this and posting them on youtube just hours after the concert ends. I'm glad they do. This Billy Joel song is called Uptown Girl.

Here's my favorite Billy Joel.

Cell Phone Concert Miley Cyrus

This post is somewhere in between being informative and a gratuitous attempt to attract more readers to this site. Although, I don't imagine too many people are searching the words "Miley Cyrus" and "Salem Oregon" together. When the pop singer performed recently at the Rose Garden in Portland, tickets went quick. It seems like the crowd that attended the concert was tech savvy and many of them shot video on their iphones and posted them to Youtube where there is a large audience of fans. The above video has been viewed over 5,000 times. That's nothing, another video from this concert has been viewed over 20,000 times already in just 3 days. Overall, video viewing online is up 41% from last year according to research done by the Nielsen Company. In August 2009, over 7.2 billion videos were played on Youtube. There were 108 million unique visitors to that site in the same time period. As cameras become smaller, there are more people creating videos and sharing with the world. A few times a week, I try to look up what kind of videos people are posting from Salem Oregon. Often, they are videos of inventory from a car dealership or vacation shots made easy to share for distant relatives. What I like to find are videos unique to Salem. The amazing thing about Youtube is that there are videos of everything. I just typed in "salem" and "restaurant" and 155 results showed up. I've even used it for videos I shot for eatsalem.com. Check them out.

The Weather Report by Willamette University Students

When someone from out of state asks you about the weather in the Willamette Valley, what do you tell them? Watch these videos of Willamette University students as the downplay the wetness of our winters.

The videos are part of a website called collegewest.net. It's full of videos made by college students talking about a variety of subjects that a high school senior might want to know when making the decision about where to seek higher education.

When people ask me about the weather, I tell them the truth. It rains a lot.

David Cook Sings David Lee at the Oregon State Fair

Lot's of people were capturing this concert last night on their cell phones. There's at least three different versions of this song on Youtube.com. I guess it's kind of a back to school theme. It's the last day of the fair, let's hope it stays dry.

Cell Phone Concerts

If you're a fan of youtube, you know that people have been taking cell phone video of their favorite performers live in concert. This video is Rodney Atkins at the Oregon State Fair. I always thought that doing this sort of thing, called bootlegging, was illegal. You can find videos like this of just about every major musician by going to youtube.com and searching the artists name. It seems like it would be impossible to confiscate every fan's phone before entering the arena and the quality of the images are so poor that I doubt that anyone would not purchase a performer's CD because they have the cell phone shot.

Salem Sillyness

I have no idea what is going on in this video or why it was made. It came up in a Youtube search and I thought it was entertaining enough to share on salemites.com. According to the Youtube page, the gentleman singing is a mall cop from Salem, Oregon. Isn't the internet making our lives so much better?

Mike Tyson in Salem

Don't worry, I'm talking about a video clip I found on Youtube of Mike Tyson boxing in Salem Oregon when he was fifteen years old. Occasionally, I search the Youtube site for videos about Salem Oregon. You never know what you'll find in there. The most viewed "Salem Oregon" video is a Barack Obama speech from March 31, 2008 at the armory. That video has been seen 247,535 times. One feature I like about Youtube is the "statistics and data" drop down. This allows you to see where a video has been embedded and how many times it's been played. Try it yourself. Go to this link of one my videos. Scroll down below the video and click on "Statistics and Data." This is th only way I've ever been able to figure out if anyone is watching the videos embedded on my sites. And, like a lot of the data collected online, I'm not sure exactly how accurate it is.
