James Roddey, a nationally recognized expert on earthquake and tsunami preparedness, will present an important and timely presentation at Chemeketa Community College Auditorium on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, at 6:30 p.m.

Salem's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and Chemeketa Community College join together to present James Roddey, who brings an informative and entertaining message about emergency preparedness. Previous presentations from Mr. Roddey have been very well received and seats fill up quickly. This event, titled "Preparing for Disasters: The Big One, little ones, and everything in between," takes place at the Chemeketa Community College Auditorium, 4000 Lancaster Drive NE, Building 6, in Salem, Oregon. The event is free and open to the public.

James Roddey is an award winning author, director, and natural hazards expert who has worked as the Earth Sciences Information Officer for the State of Oregon and the Director of Communications for the American Red Cross. Roddey also led the first of its kind, federally funded, tsunami readiness outreach and education program in the nation, working with over two dozen cities at the Oregon coast over the course of two years.

Roddey is a familiar face to people around the country when natural disasters strike, through his appearances nationally on CNN, The CBS Evening News, and NPR. "We have to stop thinking a disaster will never happen to us, or if it does, somebody will be there to save us," says Roddey. "In big disasters, like earthquakes, tsunamis, or hurricanes, you and your neighbors, even your community, could be on your own for much longer than you think."

Roger Stevenson, Emergency Manager with the City of Salem, encourages everyone in the community to take an active role in their personal preparedness. "Attending a presentation by James Roddey is a proactive step in the right direction" said Stevenson. Also on hand during the event will be Salem CERT members, Marion County Citizen Corps, and Red Cross volunteers who will be available before and after the presentation to answer questions and provide preparedness information. "Get a Plan, Get a Kit, Get Trained, and Get involved" added Stevenson.
