Number 2 in Google Search

I just discovered that if you google the word "salemites," salemites.com is #2 in the organic results. Probably not a lot of people googling that word yet. In fact, google is only the #2 referrer to this site. Blogger.com being #1. Google is pretty amazing if you think about it. Plug in any combination of words that you want and thousands of results come up. It's always best to be at the top of the organic results in these searches. The "organic results" are links that google displays that are not ads. Most people click on the organic results while using google. Studies show that your eye is actually drawn to the top left corner of the results page of google. This is what I found when I googled "google organic results percentage." While writing eatsalem.com, I've discovered that many restaurants don't have a website, so when someone is searching for information about a restaurant guess what comes up in the first couple of results. Try it, plug in spaghetti warehouse salem or young's teriyaki salem oregon. That's how most people find eatsalem.com.

Finding a niche like this is what will propel a blog through google. It's the combination of a couple of things. The first is finding key words that not a lot of people are using in their sites. The next part of this equation is getting a lot of people to search those key words. For instance, if you write about Minto Brown Park, you might make it to the top of the google results page but there might not be a lot of people searching for those words. If you wrote about Paris Hilton, it would be more difficult to get to the top of the results page but there are probably tens of thousands of people searching her name everyday. Somewhere in the middle of these two examples is the winning combination of key words for bringing traffic into a website.

By the way, this is the first time I've ever written the words "Paris Hilton" in a blog post so I'll have to see how well salemites.com is treated by the google algorithm.

  2. Nobody has found salemites.com searching for Paris Hilton yet. Oh well. I've learned if you combine "Paris Hilton" and "Salemites" we are #1 on google.

  3. Hmmm. I wonder how many people link those two words. Other than you. :) It reminds me of a game we used to play where you put in two words and try to come up with a combination that only gives you one link option. I think google has changed so much now, though, that the game might not work as well.
