While reading the article in the SJ about the current controversy brewing over the Straub property in West Salem, I stopped thinking about the players, their posturing, their concerns and began to imagine a working museum that is steeped in local and state history; situated on a shared campus with a middle school and an elementary school. What an opportunity!
With the right kind of management this could become an educational asset illustrating to Salem students and maybe all of Oregon that our history isn't exclusive to text and photos in dusty books on shelves.
The property is located in the upper right fourth - bordered by Orchard Hts. Rd and Doaks Ferry Rd.

I was thinking somewhat similair in that direction. They should be able to build around it and if they can't it's probably because they don't have a very creative developer for the project.
ReplyDeleteIf I were a developer/architect this opportunity would give me heart palpitations of joy.
ReplyDeleteI don't think working around the building is a problem. The problem is paying them family what the land is worth.
ReplyDeleteThe question is can you force a family to sell during a down market for a school? The fact is that is prime land right there. The school district isn't going to get a good deal on it, even in a down market.
You're right, Melina. I don't think the existing building is a problem, but I do see it as an opportunity. On the other hand, getting the price you think your land is worth is never easy, and even more so when the government wants it.
