Salem Police investigate accidental gunshot incident

SALEM POLICE INVESTIGATE ACCIDENTAL GUNSHOT INCIDENT

At 5:46pm, Sunday, Oct. 26, 2012; Officers responded to a report of a subject with a gunshot wound at a residence in the 3200 block of Kathleen Ave NE. On arrival, Officers found Joe Hernandez, 58 yrs., who resides at the residence, in the garage with a gunshot wound to his upper abdomen. Hernandez was transported to Salem Hospital for treatment.

Investigation revealed Hernandez and his wife were cleaning out the garage, going through belonging of the wife's deceased father, when Hernandez came across a box with a loaded 410 gauge gopher gun in it. At this point, it is unknown if the Hernandez recognized what it was. The gopher gun discharged striking Hernandez in the upper abdomen area. Hernandez was transported by ambulance to Salem Hospital for treatment. Hernandez's wound does not appear to be life threatening at this time.

At this point, the incident appears to be accidental.
