This is just a little reminder, in case you haven't heard, that Salem's own Cherry City Derby Girls will be bouting on Saturday, November 13th at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. This will be an intramural bout, so two teams in the league will be bouting each other. The bout starts at 7, and doors open at 6 pm. The name of the bout is November Pain, and the theme is 1980s hair metal. There is a costume contest as well, so come dressed up in your best 80s rock costume!
For those of you that haven't been to a bout for whatever reason, it's well worth checking this out. This is not your roller derby of the 70s. There's no acting, it's all real in this modern incarnation of roller derby. I myself joined the league shortly after moving here, and I can tell you the women on the teams represent a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Stereotypes really don't apply here...except maybe for the short skirts and skimpy outfits. There are probably just as many moms on the teams as not, and lots of professionals in various fields as well.
It's great fun, so I recommend coming out to give it chance if you haven't. Get tickets from certain local businesses or online (more info here). They're only $10 ahead of time and $12 at the door. Also, CCDG is holding a toy drive in conjunction with the bout, and if you bring a new, unwrapped toy, you can get a coupon for $2 off admission.
We always seem to need volunteers to help out with making sure the bout goes smoothly so if you have always wanted to get involved, be in touch with the CCDG volunteer coordinator. I should be there as a non-skating official (NSO), so I hope to see some of you there!
