A seventeen-year old North Salem High School student was taken into custody following an incident where he allegedly pulled out a handgun in class and pointed it towards another student.

The incident began shortly after 10:00 am on November 7 when the student was in class and was seen pointing what appeared to be a handgun towards another student. School staff contacted the student immediately and he fled as security personnel were arriving. Salem Police School Resource Officers were notified, and several officers from the Youth Services Unit and Patrol responded to the scene.

Officers continued to check the area and located the suspect several blocks from the school at about 12:25 pm. The suspect did not have the gun with him at the time, and a thorough search of the school premises has been conducted by school officials and police officers. At this point the weapon has not been located.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident and will be charged with Disorderly Conduct, Menacing and Possession of a Firearm in a Public Building. There were no injuries during the incident.

Response by school personnel and the Salem Police was very rapid in this situation, and police officers on scene worked very quickly with school staff to place North Salem High School and Parrish Middle School into immediate lockdown until the suspect could be located. Officers worked closely with school staff and security personnel to ensure the safety of the students in the schools, and classes resumed as normal following the incident.
