At approximately 4:14 a.m. on July 11, 2012, fire crews from the Salem Fire Department were dispatched to the 2700 block of 25th Street SE in Salem, Oregon, for a commercial structure fire. The call was reported via 911 by a passing motorist who noticed smoke and flames near the roof of the building.

Upon arrival by the first arriving fire engine approximately three minutes later, heavy black smoke was visible within the building and a second alarm was called, bringing additional Salem Fire firefighting resources. A total of six fire engines and two ladder trucks were dispatched, along with command staff and medic units from Rural Metro Ambulance.

Firefighters made an aggressive interior fire attack using preconnected hose lines to quickly suppress the fire, which was located in the repair garage portion of the business. Firefighters also conducted primary and secondary searches as well as ventilating the building to reduce heat and smoke conditions.

Fire damage was limited to the workbench area with heavy smoke and heat damage in the 5-bay repair area. Fire investigation personnel from Salem Fire have conducted an investigation into the origin and cause and determined the fire to be accidental in nature related to oily rags. Fire damage estimates are not yet known.

One firefighter incurred a minor injury during the fire and was evaluated on the scene by medical personnel. The majority of fire crews were back in service within 2 hours and the incident was closed at approximately 7:38 a.m.
