BOYS PLAYING WITH FIREWORKS CAUSE DUPLEX FIRE.
Posted: July 4th, 2012 12:24 AM

On July 3, 2012 at 8:18 p.m.; the Salem Fire Department and the Salem Police Department responded to a duplex fire at 4306 San Francisco Dr NE. It was reported that the fire was possibly set by juveniles playing with fireworks. When firefighters and police arrived, it was determined that the side of the duplex that was on fire was unoccupied. The fire was isolated to the side of the duplex and the roof area. The exterior of the duplex suffered extensive fire damage; while the interior suffered water and smoke damage.

The investigation revealed that three boys ages 7-10 years were playing with fireworks which they kicked into some nearby shrubs next to the duplex. The shrubs caught fire, which in turn, caught the duplex on fire. The resident of the duplex was not at home at the time of the fire. The boys were released to their parents and due to the ages of the boys, the investigation will be referred to the Marion County Juvenile Department for possible charges.
