SALEM POLICE-OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING

A Salem Police Officer was involved in a fatal shooting of a 26-year old male on the evening of October 21, 2012 in the 3700 block of Scenic View Dr SE.
The incident began at approximately 8:25 pm when a female called to report that her boyfriend was despondent, had a gun and was threatening to kill himself. The subject had left the residence in the 3700 block Scenic View Dr SE at the time, and officers were dispatched to check the area and check on his welfare.
Officers encountered the armed subject outside of his residence. He was ordered repeatedly by officers to drop the weapon, and shots were fired by Salem Police Corporal Ryan Demmer when he failed to do so. The subject was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers were injured.
The deceased subject is not being identified at this time.
The involved officers will be placed on administrative leave as is standard procedure while the incident is being investigated.
The Oregon State Police and Marion County District Attorney's Office will be coordinating and conducting this investigation. This is standard procedure for the Salem Police Department to request the Oregon State Police conduct an independent investigation of incidents of this nature.
