SALEM POLICE RESOLVE ARMED BARRICADE INCIDENT.

On May 16, 2012 at 5:00 p.m., officers of the Salem Police Department responded to 850 Fairview Ave SE #3 regarding a report of a suicidal man with a gun who had fired one shot. The suspect, Todd Elsenraat (43 years of age), had barricaded himself in his apartment and refused to surrender. The Salem Police Department SWAT Team and Tactical Negotiations Team were activated and responded to the scene. Mr. Elsenraat was intoxicated and despondent over a recent break-up with his wife. Crisis negotiators spoke with Mr. Elsenraat for approximately seven hours and Mr. Elsenraat subsequently surrendered without incident at approximately 12:30 a.m. The investigation revealed Mr. Elsenraat had fired one shotgun round into the ceiling of his bathroom. A shotgun and numerous shotgun rounds were confiscated at the scene. Mr. Elsenraat was taken into custody and charged with Unlawful Use of a Weapon and lodged at the Marion County Correctional Facility. There were no reported injuries to a
nyone during this incident.
