Smokin! Boston Comes to Salem!

OK, so it wasn't exactly all the original members of the east coast classic rock band Boston but I didn't hear anyone in this crowd complain. Fran Cosmo a former lead vocalist for the band and his son Anthony thrilled a large crowd of fans on the ball field at Wallace Marine Park in West Salem Friday night. I think the crowd was a bit skeptical before the show, maybe in disbelief to have a legend of rock performing before them in Polk County of all places.

As soon as the first recognizable guitar chord was strummed, the stage was stormed by air guitarists, air drummers, air bass players, singers and a variety of rockers of all ages. Yes, that was me on air guitar playing along while I balanced my son on my shoulders. There was even a guy with full Boston gear including concert tee shirt, head band and biking gloves. My wife suspected this guy must have been a plant but based on the enthusiasm and smiles of the crowd I think he was absolutely legitimate.

Worried that parking might be a problem we parked on the east side of the river and walked over the new pedestrian bridge. Several other people had the same idea. We got into talking with some of these folks and concluded that as long as these guys are good muscians playing Boston songs, we'll have a good time. Whoever these guys were, in the history of Boston, they were talented and a huge get for West Fest, an event put on by the West Salem Business Association. All of this for only $3 a person.

We were entertained to say the least. Boston was one of the first rock bands that I was exposed to while growing up listening to my big brother's record collection. To this day, I can't help but turn it up when it's on the radio. My kids have even become familiar with the songs.

The songs were played almost exactly like you would hear on the record to the thrill of many in attedance. We were in the crush of fans in front of the stage which seemed to grow as the concert progressed. I'd be surprised if any one left without feelin' satisfied with this show. The set included songs like Rock and Roll Band, More Than a Feeling, Cool the Engines, Something About You and closed with the popular Smokin'. Ironically being played in a smoke free venue. The singer Fran Cosmo played some his own songs in the mix and may have created new fans for his own work.

It was a great night in Salem for us. Can't wait to see what's in store for West Fest next year.
