The City of Salem Fire Department is coordinating a full-scale emergency exercise at the Salem Municipal Airport in September, which cumulates a three-year cycle related to emergency preparedness and response at the airport.

On September 20, 2013, emergency responders, hospital medical staff, disaster relief workers, and volunteers will participate in a simulated emergency designed to evaluate the operational capability of local emergency management plans and response capabilities to a large mass-casualty incident. This full-scale exercise builds upon previous tabletop and functional exercises held over the previous two years and includes the mobilization and actual movement of emergency personnel, equipment, and resources.

Approximately 200-250 individuals from across the response community will participate in this exercise, which includes Salem Airport, Salem Fire, Rural Metro Ambulance, Salem Hospital, West Valley Hospital, and the American Red Cross. Ambulance service providers from across the region are also scheduled to participate and Salem's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will be integrated into the exercise, providing simulated victims and site support.

The exercise will take place at a closed area of the airport and will not impact normal airport operations. Radio traffic will include simulated emergency communications and emergency response vehicles, including fire engines, rescue trucks, and ambulances, will be operating in the area. The drill will begin at 08:30 a.m. and is anticipated to last approximately four hours.

The full-scale exercise conforms to current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines for all Certificated, Part 139 Airports, such as Salem's McNary Field. The exercise also provides hands-on training and experience for responders and tests local emergency operations plans. Due to site security needs, the exercise is not open to the public.

A media staging area will be provided near the main entry gate of the airport, which is located at 2990 25th Street SE, in Salem, Oregon.
