Open garage doors invite residential burglars

OPEN GARAGE DOORS INVITE RESIDENTIAL BURGLARS

News Release from Salem Police Dept.
Posted on FlashAlert: July 19th, 2013 4:44 PM
The Salem Police Department reminds Salem residents to lock doors and windows when leaving their home unattended for any period of time.

A recent string of residential burglaries indicated the point of entry as being unlocked entrances, unlatched sliding glass doors, as well as several open garage doors. Of the eighteen reported burglaries, only three had signs of forced entry.

Summer is indeed the time to catch up on work inside and outside your home. It is easy to leave the garage door open to access ladders and mowers, for example, but it also exposes your home to easy entry while you may otherwise be distracted.

An open garage door also inadvertently advertises to passersby all of your stored valuables that may seem too good to pass up to a would-be criminal.

Summer has also brought about some warm weather causing residents to leave windows and sliding glass doors open. Please remember to lock them or use a window/slider lock system that allows for air passage, but keeps a thief from getting inside.

Please remember to be vigilant of suspicious activity and report anything out of the norm to the police. If it is in progress, please dial 9-1-1.

  1. The number of home burglaries traditionally spike in the summer months. I think that light timers and Fake TV (www.faketv.com) are excellent solutions to deter burglars. Also, playing anti-theft home occupancy sounds MP3 or a CD (sells on Amazon or at http://www.webensource.com/burglar_deterrent_cd/ ) in home while away is a great way to trick burglar that someone is in.
