Alert Patrol Officer Captures Armed Robber

An alert Salem Police patrol officer recognized an armed robbery suspect walking down the street and captured him without incident on the afternoon of January 14.

The armed robbery occurred at the Subway sandwich shop at 1310 State St in Salem on the evening of January 11. The suspect allegedly entered the business at about 10:00 pm, displayed a handgun as he demanded money from the clerk and fired a gunshot into the wall near where the worker was standing. The suspect was able to get cash from the register and fled on foot from the store.

Investigators obtained surveillance photos from the incident and distributed photos of the suspect throughout the agency in an attempt to identify the suspect.

On January 14 at about 1:55 pm, Salem Police Officer Larry Shryer was on patrol in the 2200 block of D Street when he recognized a subject who was walking down the street as the suspect in the Subway robbery. Officer Shryer followed the suspect as he waited for other officers to arrive in the area, but he contacted the suspect after it was apparent he had spotted Officer Shryer. The suspect was in possession of a loaded handgun at the time he was contacted. After being interviewed by detectives in the case, the suspect was arrested for the robbery.

The suspect was identified as 45-year old James Bradley Palen of Oxnard, California. He was booked into the Marion County Jail on charges of Robbery in the First Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, two counts of Attempted Assault in the First Degree, Felon in Possession of a Weapon, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Altering a Firearms Identification Number and Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine.

Officer Larry Shryer has been with the Salem Police Department since September of 1994 after starting his police career with the Keizer Police Department. Officer Shryer's actions are an example of outstanding police work which resulted in the removal of a dangerous felon within our community.
