During the evening of Friday, April 13th, an officer with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife spotted a vehicle parked in a prohibited area in Baskett Slough. Officer Rachel York determined Michael Montgomery, 49 years of age, a teacher at Sprague High School, was in the vehicle along with a minor female who is a student. Officer York thought the situation was suspicious, but was unable to determine that a crime had occurred. Officer York transported the female home and alerted her parents of the situation.

On Saturday evening, Officer York contacted the female again to inquire about the relationship. This time the female disclosed that the relationship with Montgomery was sexual, confirming York's suspicions. Officer York then notified the Salem Police Department who began an investigation.

Salem Police detectives arrested Michael Montgomery at home in Salem today. He has been charged with five counts of Sex Abuse II and lodged in the Marion County Correctional Facility.

"We are extremely grateful that Officer York listened to her instincts and followed up on her suspicions," said Lt. Steve Birr of the Salem Police Criminal Investigations Section.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact Detective Jeff Staples at (503)540-2351.
