SALEM POLICE ASSIST MARION CO. FIRE WITH A SUSPICIOUS DEVICE AT MARY EYRE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

At 1:41pm today, Marion Col Fire District 1 units responded to Mary Eyre Elementary School at 4868 Buffalo Dr. SE due to a suspicious pop bottle with an unknown liquid in a trash dumpster. It was learned another police agency had been involved in an earlier vehicle pursuit where the suspect fled on foot and ran across school property. The suspect was taken into custody and police units cleared the area.
After the police units had cleared, school activities returned to normal. While outside on school grounds, a student found a one liter pop bottle with a liquid inside it. The bottle contents were secured by the bottle cap. The student gave the bottle to a teacher, who in turn gave it to janitorial staff, who threw the bottle into a trash dumpster. A short time later, it was discovered that the contents in the bottle were reacting and causing the bottle to swell. It is unknown at this time if the suspect taken into custody earlier dropped the bottle or not.
Marion Co. Fire responded at 1:41pm, along with Salem Haz-Mat and the National Guard Civil Service Team, which assists with chemical analysis if needed. Due to potential danger of the bottle erupting, the Salem Police Bomb Sqd. were requested to assist. The dumpster was located in an area which did not pose a safety concern to students, staff or the school. School staff made notifications per their safety protocols.
At 4:15pm, the suspicious bottle was rendered safe by the SPD Bomb Sqd. after the school day was done and students gone for the day. The bottle's liquid contents were then collected for testing. Identification of the liquid contents will take additional time to determine.
Salem Police Bomb Sqd. then cleared the scene.
