Salem Police Youth Services officers arrested a 19-year old Salem man for Public Indecency and Using A Child in the Display of Sexually Explicit Conduct based on incidents of exposing himself to children and illegally photographing a young child.

On Thursday afternoon, Jeremiah Auvil was taken into custody and transported to Polk County Jail on three counts of Public Indecency and one count of Using A Child in the Display of Sexually Explicit Conduct. The circumstances involved incidents on November 4 and November 8 when Auvil drove past some children in West Salem in his vehicle and exposed himself to them and one incident on September 6 when Auvil unlawfully photographed a young child at the Courthouse Fitness Facility in West Salem. Auvil's photo and a photo of his vehicle are attached to this release.

There have also been other incidents reported over the past weeks of a suspicious subject driving by and/or approaching children in West Salem. Based on this information, the Salem Police Department is requesting anyone who has knowledge of other such incidents to contact the Salem Police Department Youth Services Unit at 503-588-6257.

The Salem Police Department would like to remind parents to speak with their children about the potential dangers associated with contact with strangers. In one of the reports, the child went to a nearby residence for help instead of walking back to his residence with the suspect following. The child decided he did not want the suspect to know where he lived, showing excellent judgment and composure.

Parents should remind their children to immediately seek help from trusted people such as teachers, store clerks or people known to the family if they feel threatened or uncomfortable in situations with strangers. If no known or trusted people are around, the child should make as much noise and draw as much attention as possible. This can be done by loudly shouting "stop, leave me alone" or other similar words that will draw attention to the situation. Adults will not commonly ask children for help or directions. Children should never get into cars with strangers and always keep a buffer between themselves and vehicles of people whom they do not know. If they see suspicious people or vehicles, they should get as many descriptive details as possible such as license plates, description and direction of travel and report the incident immediately.

Neighborhood Watch is an excellent program for helping families identify trusted neighbors in your area that children can contact in an emergency. If you are not a member of Neighborhood watch, contact your local law enforcement agency for assistance in developing a program in your neighborhood.
