News Release from: Salem Police Dept.
SALEM POLICE TO JOIN INTERNATIONAL TWEET-A-THON
Posted: March 20th, 2013 10:25 AM

The Salem Police Department will join approximately 160 agencies from the US, Canada, and other continents around the world in a tweet-a-thon set to begin Friday, March 22 in an effort to bring attention to law enforcement's use of social media.

"We're pleased to be able to participate because we have found our use of Twitter to be a great way to engage with our community, as well as use the platform for public safety messages," said Sgt. Jim Welsh of the Crime Prevention Unit.

The tweet-a-thon starts at 8:00 a.m. March 22 and runs through 8:00 a.m. March 23 which allows for all agencies to participate given the myriad time zones from country to country. Any agency can join the event and tweet during any portion of the 24-hour period.

The hashtag for the event will be #poltwt.

As part of the tweet-a-thon participation, the Salem Police Department (@salem_police) Twitter followers are invited to join in an online discussion with officers from the Crime Prevention and Traffic Control Units from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The chat will be on the topic of traffic. Followers will be able to ask questions about traffic law and share their annoyances about motorists. "Traffic questions are the most popular we receive, so we invite folks to ask us their questions and even share some of their pet peeves about drivers," said Welsh. The Crime Prevention Unit is working with local public access tv station, Capital Community Televsion to create a new series called Driver Tune Up and will use the input as part of the show.
