Salem Fire Department Plans Rescue Training

SALEM FIRE DEPARTMENT PLANS RESCUE TRAINING

As part of ongoing training and preparedness related to technical rescue, the Salem Fire Department will be conducting high-angle rescue training at the Courthouse Square building in April and May. The building is located at 555 Court Street NE in Salem.

The rescue drills are a cooperative effort between Salem Fire; property owners Marion County and Salem-Keizer Transit; design-builder Structural Preservation Systems; and Safety Consulting Solutions who is managing on-site safety during the construction process.

The hands-on training will concentrate on techniques necessary to safely rescue workers that may have been incapacitated while working at high angles above the ground. It will also allow construction crews to familiarize themselves with the fire department needs and procedures should a real incident occur.

Tentative dates for the training are April 1, 4, 15, 18, 29, and May 2, 2013. The training is planned to take place between 9:00 a.m. and noon each day, which will allow fire department technical team members to drill during their normal duty days and shifts.

Firefighters and vehicles participating in the exercise will be operating on the north side of the structure, with no street closures planned. Fire crews involved in the training will be available for actual emergency response during the planned training. There is no anticipated impact to the ongoing construction project or normal bus service.

The Salem Fire Department Technical Rescue Team operates out of Fire Station #4 and team members receive extensive training and perform rescues in the areas of Confined Spaces, Rope Rescue, Trench Rescue, Machinery Extrication, Entrapped Patients, Structural Collapse and Advanced Heavy Rescue.
