At 4:56 p.m., the Salem Police Department responded to a report of a serious motor vehicle accident at Liberty Rd S and Davis Rd S involving a single motor vehicle and a skateboarder. It is expected that Liberty Rd S will be closed in both directions for the next two hours while the accident is being investigated. The Salem Police Department Traffic Control Unit is investigating the crash. The investigation is on-going, but from what officers have learned, a 1997 Ford Econoline van (white in color)operated by a 63-year old male was traveling northbound on Liberty Rd S when a skateboarder proceeded off of Raineer Dr SE directly into the path of the van. The skateboarder is 20 years of age. The driver of the van remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. The 20-year old skateboarder suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

As of 8:00 p.m., Liberty Rd S at Davis Rd S is now open. The driver of the van has been identified as Ervan Smith 63-years old. The skateboarder has been identified as Jacob Becker 20-years old. Mr. Becker was issued citations for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants and for Minor in Possession of Alcohol and released. It was determined that he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
