OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING

At approximately 7:39 pm, Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012; Salem Police Officers responded to a report of a suspicious activity involving a male subject carrying a rifle to a vehicle in front of 2465 4th St. NE. Dispatch then relayed that there was a verbal dispute nearby.
On arrival of Patrol Officers, there was a large group of subjects in front of the residence and in the street. When the male subject saw the patrol car, he left the rifle and fled on foot.
Officers were able to determine that no crime had occurred, and learned the identity of the male subject who had fled on foot. A warrant check determined that the male subject, identified as Ricky Wayne Lewis Jr., had an outstanding arrest warrant.
As Officers searched the residence for Lewis, multiple gunshots were fired. Lewis was shot multiple times and was transported to Salem Hospital where he was being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The involved Officers have been identified as Sgt. Jason VanMeter, Ofc. Ben Ruddell and Ofc. Brian Bidiman. The Officers were not injured.
Lewis, 41 yrs old of Salem was wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant for Possession of Methamphetamine issued from the Marion County Circuit Court, with a bail of $50,000.
The Oregon State Police and Marion County District Attorney's Office responded and will be conducting the investigation. The involved Officers will be placed on administrative leave during the course of the investigation.
Future information will be released by the Marion Co. District Attorney's Office.
