Posted: July 25th, 2012 7:26 PM

Salem Police Case #12-28638
Occ time/date: 4:43pm, Weds., 07/25/12
Location: Commercial St. SE at the 12th St. SE junction

At approx. 4:43pm, Cpl. Ryan Demmer was operating a marked police vehicle, traveling north, in the right hand lane of Commercial St SE as he approached the 12th St. SE junction. Ahead of Cpl. Demmer were several vehicles which were driving, but suddenly stopped due to another vehicle ahead of them experiencing mechanical problems. The vehicle with mechanical problems had suddenly stalled, which caused traffic behind them to stop.

When Cpl. Demmer suddenly realized the vehicles were stopped, he attempted to avoid an accident. However, despite swerving towards the curb, Cpl. Demmer was not able to avoid rear ending a stopped 2006 Subaru being operated by Pamela Daves of Salem, who in turn was forced into a 1995 Pontiac Grand Am being operated by Jason Sprague of Salem, who in turn bumped into a 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser being operated by Alethea Olsen, who had her three children, ages 15, 13 and 9 yrs as passengers.

Medics responded to evaluate Olsen, who had a complaint of pain. No medical transport was necessary. No other persons involved were injured.

Traffic for northbound Commercial St. SE was reduced from two to one lane during the crash investigation. Normal traffic resumed after an hour.

The crash investigation is continuing.
