Salem Police officers responded Wednesday just before 8:00 am to a report of a burglary in progress at a residence in the 2400 block of Market St NE. The resident had been away for a few days and returned home, hearing strangers in the house. Officers found 32 year old Brandi Hewitt and 44 year old Gary Cooley inside the residence. They were both arrested and charged with Burglary I. Cooley was also charged with a Parole Violation. Both are transients. They were lodged at the Marion County Correctional Facility.

Salem Police detectives continued the investigation and obtained a search warrant for a residence in the 2600 block of Phipps Ln NE. At about 4:00 pm yesterday detectives served the search warrant recovering property stolen from the Market St residence. 39 year old Jason Retherford was arrested at the Phipps Ln address where he lived, charged with Burglary I, Identity Theft, and Possession of Methamphetamine. He was also lodged at the Marion County Correctional Facility.

Residence are reminded that if they are going to be away for a few days that it is a good idea to let a trusted neighbor, relative, or friend know so that they may keep an eye on your belongings in your absence.
