Children in grades 2 to 4 who love to read are invited to participate in a new adventure – a Children's Choice Book Club that will give them a chance to read and talk about each of the books nominated for the 2011 Beverly Cleary Children's Choice Award. Readers will meet once a month to discuss each book, play a game or make a craft, and finish it up by voting for the favorite nominee in March.
The group will kick off with a meeting from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, September 22 in the Children's Activity Room. There will be a discussion of "Puppy Power" by Judy Cox in which learning how to train her gigantic Newfoundland puppy helps boisterous third-grader Fran gain enough self-control to win the part of princess in the class play.
All meetings will be on from 4-5 p.m. in the Children's Activity Room. Additional meetings will be:
- Wednesday, November 17 - Bad Kitty Gets a Bath by Nick Bruel
- Wednesday, December 15 - The Home Run King by Patricia McKissack
- Wednesday, January 19, 2011 - Alvin Ho: Allergic to Girls, School, and Other Scary Things by Lenore Look
- Wednesday, February 16, 2011 - Nic Bishop Frogs by Nic Bishop
Pre-registration is required for this special discussion series. Youth who want to be involved should stop by the Youth Services Reference Desk to sign up and pick up a copy of the first month's book, or call 503-588-6088 for more information.
