SALEM FIRE DEPARTMENT PLANS HIGH-RISE DRILL
Posted: March 22nd, 2013 5:05 PM

As part of ongoing training and preparedness, the Salem Fire Department will be conducting high rise training at the Robert Lindsey Tower Senior Apartments on Sunday, March 24, 2013. The building is located at 370 Court Street S.E. in Salem.

The high rise drills are a cooperative effort between Salem Fire and the Salem Housing Authority, who manages the property.

The hands-on training will concentrate on techniques necessary to perform rescue and firefighting in the 11 story residential building. It will also allow occupants and staff to become familiar with the fire department operations and procedures should a real incident occur.

The simulated fire and rescue drill is scheduled for approximately 4 hours, beginning at 09:00 a.m. The training will focus on establishing the incident command system, directing effective firefighting forces, evacuating occupants (simulated), ventilation, fire sprinkler system support, fire containment and extinguishment. There will be no actual fire during the training exercise. Smoke will be used on the rooftop to simulate fire conditions. Training objectives include safety, communication, firefighting strategy and tactics, and deployment of personnel and fire attack hoses.

Firefighters and vehicles participating in the exercise will be operating in the apartment parking lot, with no street closures planned. Fire crews involved in the training will be available for actual emergency response during the planned training. Occupants of the apartment building have been notified of the drill. There is no anticipated impact to residents and there are no planned street closures.
