OVERTURNED TRUCKLOAD OF CHICKENS SNARLS TRAFFIC IN SALEM

A semi truck hauling approximately 5,400 live chickens overturned in downtown Salem, snarling traffic for nearly six hours.
41-year old Patricia L Aguilar of Kelso was driving the semi with two trailers loaded with live chickens northbound on Front St merging onto northbound Commercial St when the incident occurred shortly before 8:00 am. Investigators believe that Aguilar was driving too fast for the load conditions on the truck, causing it to flip onto its right side as it took a sweeping left hand turn onto Commercial St. A pedestrian traffic control pole was severed and several vehicles damaged in an adjacent car lot when the trailers tipped over, and chickens were strewn about the car lot, sidewalk and roadway as well. A considerable number of the chickens were killed in the crash, and many others appeared to have died during the cleanup phase.
The semi truck was being operated under the Signature Trucking Company of Kelso, Washington and was bound for Kelso when the incident occurred. The load originated in rural Polk County and was one of several trips scheduled for the day. Driver Patricia Aguilar was transported to Salem Hospital for observation.
The crash closed northbound Commercial St between Union St and Belmont St for nearly six hours and snarled traffic in the north end of downtown and is still under investigation.
