As Portland Opera prepares to open the alarming "Hansel and Gretel," the Studio Artists will again visit Salem Public Library to sing excerpts from the shows.
The preview for Engelbert Humperdinck's setting of the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale will be:
2:30 p.m. Saturday, October 30
Loucks Auditorium at Salem Public Library, 585 Liberty St. SE
Free and open to the public, with seating on a first-come, first-seated basis
Perfect for Halloween weekend, the story involves parents who cannot provide for their children, children lost in the woods, and a really scary witch.
The music in this opera is full of lovely folk-like melodies. The most famous piece is the Evening Prayer duet sung by the two lost children.
The Studio Artists are young singers taking a two-year program to gain experience in a professional opera company. They will sing excerpts while Robert Ainsley, the Opera's Associate Musical Director, will narrate the stories of the operas.
This is the second year that Salem Public Library has partnered with Portland Opera to bring the preview performances to the community. Information: 503-588-6052 or www.salemlibrary.org.
